Sani Pass, which switchbacks uphill from the South African town of Underberg to Lesotho’s spectacular Sani Top, is entrenched as perhaps the most popular 4×4 route in Southern Africa. Less well-known is that Sani Top is also the springboard for an equally scenic and even more challenging route to Sehlabathebe via the rugged Matabeng Pass.

Suited only to hardcore mountain bikers, or to 4x4s with experienced drivers, this route is notable for its panoramic views and natural splendour.

It also connects with the Highland Ski Route (which ends at Sani Top) and one could continue on from Sehlabathebe to Qacha’s Nek for the Southern Rustic Route or the Quthing Valley Route.

Sani Top offers stunning views back down Sani Pass, especially at sunrise, and it is a great site for high-altitude wildlife such as Sloggett’s ice rat and Drakensberg rockjumper.

A round day-hike leads from Sani Top to the 3,482-metre peak of Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest point in Southern Africa.

Matabeng Pass follows a series of dramatic switchback before summiting at 2,940 metres.

Lesotho’s oldest and largest national park, Sehlabathebe is a hiker’s paradise renowned for its bizarre rock formations, high-altitude ponds and waterfalls, prehistoric rock art, prolific spring flowers, and wildlife such as grey rhebok and baboon.
