THABA-BOSIU CULTURAL DAY: CELEBRATING HERITAGE & CULTURE AND STRENGTHENING REGIONAL UNITY

Culture is a key component of the tourism product, offering uniqueness and providing visitors with unique and unforgettable experiences that attract them to a destination. In this regard, tourism experiences that connect host communities and visitors to local cultural practices are crucial.

Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village conceptualized and hosted a Cultural Day event on 25 October 2025, motivated by the need to celebrate, preserve, and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Basotho nation.

As Africans, especially within the Southern African region, we share similar cultural identities and values. In appreciation of this, the event organizers invited neighbouring countries Eswatini, Botswana, and South Africa to participate and showcase their unique cultural performances.

The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) supports initiatives that promote Basotho culture and heritage, as they enhance the country’s appeal as an attractive destination for travelers. As a result, LTDC found it prudent to support this event, as it aligns with its mandated responsibilities of promoting, reviving, and developing traditional handicrafts, festivals, and cultural heritage.

The event also served as a vibrant exhibition of culture, with visitors from Eswatini, Botswana, and South Africa proudly wearing their exquisite traditional attire. The atmosphere was electric, filled with contagious joy and excitement. Women ululated in celebration, and the crowd cheered exuberantly, their enthusiasm impossible to ignore.

The occasion was not just a cultural showcase, but a fierce rivalry in which various traditional groups competed. The competition was divided into two categories: Adults and Youth. Contending traditional groups included Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village, Lesotho Defence Force, Likoafa Tsa Thaba-Tseka, Thaba-Bosiu Mokhibo Group, Likhibi Tsa Thaba-Moea, and Mahlabatheng in the Adult category. The Youth category featured Phororong, Christ the King High School, Ikaheng High School, Letsie High School, and a variety of other talented youth, ensuring a well-rounded national cultural display.

When the dust settled, Phororong emerged victorious in the Adult category, claiming first place along with a trophy and M6, 000.00. Likoafa Tsa Thaba-Tseka secured second place, earning a trophy and M4, 000.00, while Sibanye Still Waters took third place, walking away with a trophy and M2, 000.00. The performances from all the groups were a powerful reflection of Basotho pride, discipline, and the profound connection between music, dance, and cultural identity.

In the Youth category Mahlabatheng high school emerged as the overall winner, taking home a trophy and a cheque of M3 000.00, Ikaheng danced scooped the second place, receiving a trophy and M2 000.00, while Christ the King high school proudly secured third place which earned them a trophy and M1 000.00.Their captivating performances reflected not only dedication but also the young generation’s commitment to preserving and promoting Lesotho’s indigenous culture.

Adding to the cultural richness of the event were guest performers from Botswana, Eswatini and QwaQwa, who mesmerized the audience with their distinct traditional styles. Their participation underscored the importance of cultural exchange and unity among the Southern African nations. As a token of appreciation Aranda handed them with blankets as it was one of the sponsors of the event, symbolizing warmth and friendship. The event also saw the presence of notable figures, including Haremone Mining Traditional Group.

In an interview with a representative from Eswatini she expressed heartfelt pleasure about the experience, saying “It was a privilege to share culture in Lesotho. The hospitality, the energy, and the love for tradition made us feel at home. “We’ve learned so much from Basotho performers, and this exchange strengthens the bond between our countries.” averred the Eswatini traveler.

“I was attracted by the aunthencity of the Basotho culture, the scenic location of Thaba-Bosiu and the opportunity to experience traditional dances, food, and crafts in their original setting” said the tourist.

In an exclusive interview with Mr. Anwary Cassim the General Manager of Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village, he indicated that employment opportunities were created for local community members, particularly youth and women.

“The event provides both direct and indirect job opportunities,” stated the Manager. “Local youth were employed as casual laborers, security assistants, and traditional performers. In addition, host communities benefit indirectly by exhibiting and selling artefacts to tourists and visitors. Volunteers also play a vital role in logistics, guiding and directing vehicles to parking areas, assisting as car guards, coordinating crowds, offering cultural hospitality, and ensuring that attendees know where to go throughout the event.”

In a discussion with the Public Relations Manager of LTDC, Mr. Molapo Matela explained that the vibrant display of traditional dances and attire not only celebrated the beauty of Basotho culture, but also strengthened regional bonds with our brothers and sisters from Eswatini, Botswana, and South Africa.

He further noted that cultural events such as this one play a pivotal role in promoting community development and tourism. “Culture is at the heart of our identity and a pillar of sustainable tourism. By celebrating who we are, we attract visitors who want to experience our authenticity and hospitality. This event also empowers local communities through job creation, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange.”

Concluding his remarks, he underscored the importance of fostering partnerships and preserving culture and heritage for future generations. “Events such as this will ensure that our culture and heritage remain alive, valued, and shared with the world.”
