“Maletsunyane Braai Festival: Where Memories Are Made”

Against the breathtaking backdrop of Maletsunyane Falls, one of Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls and listed by Condé Nast Traveler among the 50 most beautiful destinations to visit in Africa, the 8th edition of the annual Maletsunyane Braai Festival took place from 28th to 30th November 2025. This three-days festival offered an engaging and fascinating on-site tent camping experience blended with a rich celebration of flame-grilled cuisine and local culture, attracting visitors from near and far to the heart of Semonkong.

The Maletsunyane Braai Festival is a bold expression of lifestyle, culture, and community. It is where tradition meets modern leisure, where the art of braai is elevated into a shared experience that brings together families, friends, and travelers from across Lesotho and beyond.

Set in the spectacular highlands of Semonkong, the festival transforms this adventure capital into a must-visit social destination alive with braai fires alive with flavor, delight, music, and a distinctive spirit of togetherness. The event attracts a wider audience from South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Europe and all the quarters of Lesotho.

Beyond barbecuing, the Maletsunyane Braai Festival unfolds as an energetic tapestry of culture, leisure, and shared experiences. Live music performances and diverse DJ line-ups set the rhythm, with celebrated artists from Lesotho and South Africa including Maleh, Selimo Thabane, Amanda Black, and others creating an electrifying atmosphere. Horse-riding excursions to nearby scenic areas and the iconic Maletsunyane Waterfalls further enriched the experience, ensuring that every corner of the festival reflects the warmth, energy, entertainment and renowned hospitality of the host community.

Embedded in the welcoming spirit of Basotho hospitality, the Maletsunyane Braai Festival continues to demonstrate that as people share moments around the fire, indelible memories are created and when those moments are shaped beneath the mist of a premier waterfall, the blazes witness moments of togetherness

The event also drew a distinguished guest list, underlining its emergence as a must-attend tourism and lifestyle. Among the high-profile attendees were senior representatives from the Government of Lesotho, state-owned agencies, and captains of industry from the private sector.

In attendance was the Right Honorable Prime Minister of Lesotho, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers including the Honorable Motlatsi Maqelepo, Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts, and Culture, and the Honorable Mokhethi Shelile, Minister of Trade, Industry and Business Development. The event was further graced by Member of Parliament, the Honorable Thabo Maretlane.

The private sector was prominently represented by the Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom Lesotho, Mr. Mohale Ralebitso, while the tourism sector was led by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), Ms. Mamello Morojele, accompanied by the Head of Strategic Marketing, Mr. Phomolo Lebotsa.

Adding to the event’s regional and international appeal were delegations from the Department of Tourism of South Africa’s Free State Province, alongside senior officials from the Republic of China, South Africa, and Lesotho. Their presence reaffirmed the event’s role as a strategic platform for tourism promotion, cross-border collaboration, placing Lesotho as an attractive destination for both leisure and business tourism.

Among this year’s attendees was Mrs. Learoma Sefuli, a local tourist who attended the festival for the first time, she said Her primary purpose for visiting Semonkong was to attend the festival, where she spent time braaiing and relaxing with refreshments while enjoying the social environment. Although she does not travel often for leisure, events such as the Maletsunyane Braai Festival motivate her to explore destinations within Lesotho.

Mrs. Sefuli lauded the safety and hospitality at the festival, noting that the host community made visitors feel welcome. She believes the event plays an important role in promoting domestic tourism, as it encourages strong local participation and showcase Semonkong as an attractive destination.

While her experience was mostly positive, she suggested a few improvements, including the creation of designated braai areas and the introduction of seamless communication cellphone cards to help festivalgoers stay in touch with family members during the event.

Inspired by her visit, Mrs. Sefuli expressed interest in returning to Semonkong to sightsee and explore other attractions, including places of interest around the area. She indicated that she would attend the Maletsunyane Braai Festival again next year, describing the experience as gratifying and pleasurable.

Amongst this year’s regional visitors was Ms. Telly Chauke from South Africa – Gauteng province, sheexplained that she traveled to Lesotho to celebrate her birthday while expanding her knowledge of the neighboring country to entertain, explore and loosen up with friends.

For Ms. Chauke, this marked her first time attending the Maletsunyane Braai Festival, making the experience particularly meaningful. While the journey into Semonkong presented some logistical challenges, especially regarding road conditions and access control, the essence of the festival left unforgettable memories.

Ms. Chauke commended the quality of facilities, safety standards, and fair pricing, noting that the event delivers genuine value for money. The welcoming spirit of the Basotho people further enhanced her stay, with particular appreciation for locals who assisted in carrying visitor ’s luggage to the camp site a shining example of Lesotho’s warm hospitality.

During her four-day stay, Ms. Chauke expressed interest in activities such as hiking and wine tasting, reflecting the growing appeal of Lesotho as a destination that blends adventure, leisure, and culture.

In an interview with one of the local vendors, Ms. Regina Moreki highlighted that “the event brought in much-needed income for her family, with earnings exceeding M2,000.00 over the 3 days period, driven by strong demand from both local and regional visitors purchasing food. She added that, despite being located outside the main festival area, she welcomed the opportunity and expressed confidence she would be even better prepared for the next edition.

In an exclusive interview, Mr. Tanki Pule of OTB Exclusive Event Management, the organizers of the Maletsunyane Braai Festival, emphasized that the festival goes beyond entertainment, serving as a strategic platform for positioning Lesotho as a preferred tourism destination.

According to Mr. Pule, the festival is specifically designed to attract visitors from near and far, while at the same time improving local talent and creative industries. “We want to sell Lesotho to the world,” he says. “This festival promotes our destination, creates opportunities for local artists, and draws people from faraway places to experience our culture in a unique setting.”

The Director strongly emphasized that each edition of the Maletsunyane Braai Festival builds lessons learned, with this year’s event introducing noteworthy enhancements to improve visitor experience, safety, and accessibility. Among these were a centralized ticket checking point at Ha Lesala, expanded staging, and strengthened infrastructure.

“We introduced four stages catering for different music genres, ensured electricity at the caravan area for better security, and provided water stands at both the caravan and parking areas,” Mr. Pule notes. “These improvements were all about comfort, safety, and seamless movement.”

Beyond the revelries, the festival delivered tangible positive impact on the local economy and to nation and the host community. Local residents capitalized on the influx of visitors through the sale of crafts, food, firewood, traditionally crafted blankets, gumboots, and by offering horse-riding and quad-biking services, making the event an exciting hub of community enterprise and cultural exchange.

Beyond its music and lifestyle appeal, the festival has transformed into a significant economic catalyst for surrounding communities. It provides a significant platform for local entrepreneurs, vendors, and service providers to directly partake in and benefit from tourism activity. Opportunities include tented accommodation, rural homestays, logistics support, and diverse tourism product offerings, while experiences such as pony trekking and local transport services further widen the festival’s economic footprints,” explained the organizer.

Eventually, the success of the festival is measured not just in numbers, but in memories. “We want attendees to leave with good memories,” Mr. Pule declared. “Memories that inspire return visits and long-term loyalty”. A well-managed campsite, a great atmosphere, and unforgettable experiences that’s what keeps people coming back.

Speaking on the festival’s growing stature, The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) Public Relations Manager, Mr. Molapo Matela, explained that the event has grown in leaps and bounds. This year’s edition attracted estimated 4495 attendees, drawing visitors mostly from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, as well as across Africa and Europe. Festivalgoers travelled from countries including South Africa, Tanzania, Eswatini, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Italy, German and the United States of America, validating the festival’s growing regional and international appeal.

Economically, the festival generated an estimated M13,197,910.00 in revenue from accommodation, food and beverages, and shopping, representing a 30.6 percent increase compared to the previous year. This growth highlights the festival’s significance in stimulating local economic activity and supporting job creation within host communities,” Mr. Matela stated.

LTDC continues to support the Maletsunyane Braai Festival as part of its strategic mandate to position it as a must-visit tourism experience, stimulate visitor spend, and strengthen Lesotho’s events-based tourism portfolio,” said Mr. Matela. He further highlighted that the festival is listed on the annual tourism events calendar, with the Corporation providing continued promotional support across multiple media platforms and website, alongside ongoing research initiatives to measure the event’s contribution to the national economy, concluded the Public Relations Manager.

As the embers die down and the haze of Maletsunyane Waterfalls settles, the Maletsunyane Braai Festival stands as a landmark showcase of how events can heighten destination attractiveness, unite communities and nations, and stimulate significant economic growth.
